Who Is Taban Deng Gai?
H.E. Lt. Gen. Taban Deng Gai is a prominent South Sudanese politician and Military General. He is currently serving as the Vice President of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity, Republic of South Sudan, a role he has performed diligently since he took oath of office on 22 February 2020.
Prior to his taking up the position of the Vice President, he was serving as the First Vice President in the Transitional Government of National Unity, and prior to that as the Governor of former Unity State (1997 - 1999) and Deputy Minister of Roads and Bridges from 1999- 2000 in Sudan as per the 1997 Khartoum Peace Agreement.
Following this, he spearheaded the reunification of SPLM/SPLA in 2002, took a key role in negotiation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005 and signed the security arrangements protocol of the CPA representing SPLM/SPLA. Following this, he served again as Governor of Unity State between 2005 - 2012. Served as SPLM/SPLA (IO) Chief Negotiator from 2013 - 2016, Team Leader of SPLM/SPLA (IO) advance team to Juba on 22nd December 2015 and appointed as Minister of Mining in 2016 as part of the Transitional Government of National Unity in accordance with the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan, 2015.
Political and Military History
H.E. Gen. Taban Deng Gai joined the SPLM/SPLA in 1983 and in recognition of his outstanding achievements was commissioned to the rank of 2nd LT in 1984. Following this, he became an instructor in Bonga training center in 1984, and was selected to visit Libya as part of the delegation led by the founder of SPLM/SPLA late Dr. John Garang De Mabior.
In addition, he served with the Tiger and Tumsah Battalions for operations in Pochalla and Pibor 1984 - 1985.He continued with the same two battalions and established SPLM/SPLA presence in Western Upper Nile, the former Unity State 1986. He was selected for training as a political commissar in Cuba 1986 - 1988. Credited among his achievements, he participated in SPLM/SPLA Bright star campaign 1988 - 1989 which succeeded in liberating the whole of Eastern Equatoria east of the Nile, Jonglei and South of Sobat. He was assigned Chairman of Itang refugee camp Managing Committee up to 1991.
